Tapton Cliffe, a historical gem nestled in Sheffield, boasts a rich narrative dating back to its construction in 1864 by John Yeomans Cowlishaw, a renowned cutler from a distinguished Sheffield family. Over the years, this iconic building has served various purposes—ranging from a women’s residence for the University of Sheffield to a Royal Infirmary Sisters’ Home, a private nursing facility, and later the headquarters for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and Blind Veterans UK. Today, Tapton Cliffe is under private ownership and undergoing a complete renovation, revealing its timeless grandeur.

Among the treasures unearthed during the renovation was an original marble mosaic floor, long hidden beneath layers of carpet tiles and adhesive residue. This is where Floor Angels, a premier stone floor restoration company, stepped in to breathe new life into a piece of history.

The Discovery: A Testament to Craftsmanship

During the renovation, Blenheim Park Estates—a bespoke property developer in South Yorkshire—approached Floor Angels with an extraordinary request. Beneath layers of carpet tiles, the original marble mosaic flooring had been discovered, albeit covered with decades-old glue and sealants.

Paul, the owner of Blenheim Park Estates, and site manager Jordan were determined to restore the floor to its former glory. Recognizing the artistry of this historic feature, they enlisted Floor Angels to assess the restoration’s feasibility and execute the transformation.

Phase One: Stripping, Cleaning, and Protecting

The project began with a thorough survey and demonstration, which showcased the team’s expertise in stone floor restoration. The results of the demonstration were nothing short of astounding, prompting the property owners to proceed with the restoration.Challenges and Execution

Restoring the 45 square meters of entrance and landing floors, along with 25 wide marble steps, was no easy task. The marble was covered in layers of old adhesive, sealants, and grime that masked its original beauty.

The team divided the work efficiently:

  • Entrance and Landing: Led by the company owner.
  • Stair Treads and Risers: Tackled by Brad and Benn.

As the layers of adhesive were meticulously stripped away, the vibrant hues and intricate patterns of the marble began to emerge. By the end of day two, 90% of the restoration was complete, with the team finishing ahead of schedule on the third day.

The result was nothing short of breathtaking—a gleaming, adhesive-free marble floor, sealed to protect its newfound brilliance.

Phase Two: Diamond Grinding and Polishing

The restoration journey doesn’t end here. Phase two, scheduled for two years down the line, promises to elevate the marble’s allure further. The team will return to diamond-grind and polish the floor, removing years of wear and scratches. This process will create a uniform shine, enrich the marble’s colors, and apply premium seals for unmatched durability.

A Restoration Worthy of Applause

The transformation of Tapton Cliffe’s marble floor has garnered admiration from industry experts and on-site tradespeople alike. One seasoned restorer called it “the best before-and-after stone restoration he has ever seen.” Such accolades speak volumes about the craftsmanship and dedication of the Floor Angels team.

Beyond the technical achievement, this project symbolizes the preservation of Sheffield’s rich architectural and cultural heritage. Tapton Cliffe’s restored marble floor stands as a testament to the artistry of the past and the potential of modern restoration techniques.

The Future of Tapton Cliffe

As Tapton Cliffe continues its comprehensive renovation, this historic building is poised to regain its place as a jewel of Sheffield’s architectural landscape. The restoration of the marble floor is just one chapter in its storied history—an achievement that underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating our shared heritage.

For those uncovering hidden treasures in historic properties, Floor Angels’ expertise proves invaluable. Their meticulous approach ensures that every restoration tells a story of timeless beauty and skilled craftsmanship, just as Tapton Cliffe’s marble floor now does.
