Wood floor restoration across Barnsley

Barnsley is fifteen minutes up the road from our base in Wortley, and it is one of the areas we work in most. The borough's housing is a mix that suits us: rows of solid Victorian and Edwardian terraces in the town itself, older stone cottages out toward Penistone and Silkstone, and a steady stream of period properties being brought back into use.

We work in homes, but also in the borough's churches, village halls and community buildings — places where the floor takes real punishment and the restoration has to be scheduled around everything else that happens in the building.

Barnsley floors and what they need

Much of Barnsley's terraced housing went up to house mining families, and it was built to last — solid softwood boards on decent joists. A century of carpet, and in a lot of cases lino and adhesive on top, has left surfaces that look beyond saving and usually are not. Adhesive residue and old bitumen come off; they just take longer than a clean sand.

Out toward Penistone, Silkstone, Thurgoland and Millhouse Green the stock changes. Stone-built cottages and farmhouses bring wide-board pine, flagstone floors and, in the older properties, Victorian encaustic tiled hallways that need an entirely different process to timber.

Ex-industrial and civic buildings across the borough throw up sprung maple and beech — school halls, chapels, working men's clubs. These are hard-wearing floors worth restoring properly, and they respond very well to sanding and a commercial-grade lacquer.

Barnsley floor sanding — common questions

Which parts of Barnsley do you cover?

All of the borough — S70 through S75 — including Penistone, Dodworth, Silkstone, Wombwell, Darfield and the outlying villages. We are based in Wortley, so most of Barnsley is around twenty minutes away.

There's old lino glued to my floorboards. Is that a problem?

No, though it adds time. Adhesive and bitumen residue come off with the first cut, and we allow for it in the quote once we have seen the floor. It is one of the reasons we survey in person rather than pricing over the phone.

Do you work in churches and village halls?

Regularly. We understand these buildings have to keep functioning, so we work around service times and bookings and phase the job where needed. Ask us about our heritage and places of worship work.

Can you match a stain to the rest of my house?

Yes. We bring samples and apply test patches on your own floor before committing to anything, because stain looks completely different on your timber under your light than it does on a sample board.
