Sheffield's wood floor sanding specialists

We are based in Wortley, on Sheffield's northern edge, which puts most of the city inside a twenty-minute drive. That matters more than it sounds: it means we can survey your floor, demonstrate the finish on a test patch, and come back to do the work without the scheduling gymnastics a firm travelling from Leeds or Manchester needs.

Sheffield has one of the best stocks of original timber flooring in the north. Most of it is still there, under carpet, in houses whose owners have no idea. Lifting a corner of underlay in a Crookes or Meersbrook terrace and finding sound Victorian pine is a normal Tuesday for us.

What we find under Sheffield carpets

The city's Victorian and Edwardian expansion left whole districts — Walkley, Crookes, Nether Edge, Sharrow, Hillsborough, Meersbrook — built with softwood floorboards throughout. Carpet went down over most of it in the 1960s and 70s, which, ironically, is why so much of it has survived in good condition.

Narrow-board pine is the most common find. It sands beautifully but wants a careful hand: the boards are thinner than modern equivalents and a heavy-handed job takes life off the floor that you cannot put back. Nail heads need punching below the surface first, and gaps usually want filling with reclaimed slivers rather than resin if the finish is going to look right.

Closer to the centre and out toward Kelham Island, converted industrial buildings throw up wider boards, maple sprung floors and the occasional parquet block. These need a different approach again — parquet in particular can lift if it is sanded before loose blocks are refixed.

Sheffield floor sanding — common questions

Do you cover the whole of Sheffield?

Yes — every S postcode, plus the surrounding villages. We are based in Wortley (S35), so most of the city is a twenty-minute drive and we can usually survey within a few days.

My Victorian floorboards have gaps. Can they still be sanded?

Almost always. Gaps are normal in floors of that age as the timber has dried and shrunk over a century. We fill them with reclaimed pine slivers cut to match, which looks far better than resin filler and moves with the floor rather than cracking away from it.

How much dust will there be?

Very little. We use Lagler sanding machines with dust extraction that captures around 98% of the dust at source. You will not need to move out or sheet the house up.

How long does a typical Sheffield terrace take?

A through lounge is usually two to three days including finishing coats. A full ground floor is typically three to four. We give you a firm schedule at survey, not a range.
